Hubert Aiwanger's sudden death brings a personal tribute from Bavaria's premier and a statement from prosecutors that there are still no indications of a criminal offense. The Free Voters leader and Bavarian deputy premier died at 55 in a Berlin hotel, according to tagesschau, the news programme of Germany's ARD public broadcasting network.
Markus Söder says he will miss Aiwanger's work, humor and their many conversations. Archive footage accompanies the account of his political career in "tagesschau 20:00 Uhr, 05.11.2026", the November 5 evening bulletin presented by Romy Hiller.
The broadcast then turns to Republicans' congressional election defeat in the United States. Washington correspondent Gudrun Engel describes a party in a state of shock, as speculation grows about changes to Donald Trump's Cabinet. In France, the report shows large demonstrations and a general strike against government austerity plans, with protesters demanding better living conditions.
Two German parliamentary decisions concern everyday costs and animal welfare. Plans to make driving licences cheaper include digital theory lessons and removing mandatory special driving sessions. Larger slaughterhouses will face compulsory video surveillance intended to make animal mistreatment more visible. The report includes responses from a slaughterhouse representative and Animal Rights Watch.
Another agreement would give the German federal government a half-share in KNDS, the Franco-German tank and defense manufacturer. The company brings together the businesses of Germany's Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and France's Nexter.
The aviation segment describes a wave of bomb threats disrupting passenger flights across Europe. Aviation expert Michael Immel says more than 20 threats have been recorded during the day. In separate coverage, the broadcaster says aircraft were diverted or escorted by military jets, with the origins of the threats still unknown.
The final news report concerns Hong Kong democracy activist Joshua Wong, who the bulletin says has received an additional ten-year prison sentence. Wong became internationally known through the city's 2014 pro-democracy protests. The segment includes Hong Kong security official Chris Tang and Human Rights Watch's Elaine Pearson, before the programme closes with Germany's weather forecast.
