Further examinations are needed to establish what caused Hubert Aiwanger's death, Germany's WELT Nachrichtensender reports, after an initial autopsy found no indication that another person was involved.
Reporting outside Berlin's Neuer Fritz hotel, correspondent Philippa Vögeding says the immediate postmortem examination has been completed and does not point to a crime. The precise cause remains unresolved. The studio presenter attributes the initial findings to Berlin prosecutors.
According to the report, Aiwanger was found dead in his hotel room the previous evening after canceling appointments because of gastrointestinal complaints. He was 55. Footage shows police outside the hotel on Friedrichstraße before the broadcast switches to Vögeding at the scene.
Aiwanger led the Free Voters and served as Bavaria's deputy premier and economy minister, working alongside state premier Markus Söder. Vögeding describes shock in political Berlin and discusses tributes, including the response from Baden-Württemberg premier Cem Özdemir. Over archive footage, she portrays Aiwanger as a respected but combative political figure. The report offers no definitive medical explanation for his sudden death.
