Passengers had boarded, left the aircraft and boarded again before their flight from Japan to South Korea was finally canceled, according to South Korea's Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).
The report shows Korean travelers protesting at a boarding gate at New Chitose Airport, which serves Sapporo on Japan's northern island of Hokkaido. Several demand that staff speak Korean as an official gestures toward the crowd.
Eastar Jet flight ZE626 was supposed to take them to Incheon. Passenger accounts displayed in the report describe nearly two hours aboard the aircraft while communication equipment problems were addressed, followed by an instruction to disembark.
The disruption continued inside the airport. According to the report, passengers waited in a restricted security area while airline staff retrieved their duty-free purchases. Forty seats on Korean Air provided an alternative for some travelers, but the transfers separated some passengers from their companions.
Those remaining boarded the Eastar aircraft again toward evening. Around 6 p.m., the flight was canceled because the crew had reached their duty-time limits, the report says.
In its statement, Eastar attributed the initial delay to maintenance needed to address static in wireless communication equipment. It said airport traffic congestion then delayed departure further, ultimately pushing the crew beyond their permitted working hours.
The airline apologized and said it would proceed with compensation arrangements. Replacement flights carried stranded passengers the following afternoon, according to the report.
An international airport serving the Sapporo metropolitan area. It is Hokkaido’s largest airport by traffic and land area.
