高市総理 米・中間選挙の結果受け「今後もトランプ氏と協力したい」(2026年11月6日)
Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is seeking a meeting with Donald Trump later this month, signaling that strengthening the alliance remains her priority after his party's U.S. midterm defeat.
Japan's All-Nippon News Network (ANNnewsCH), operated by TV Asahi, shows Takaichi speaking to reporters at the prime minister's office on November 5. She describes the Japan-U.S. alliance as a central pillar of diplomacy and security, and says she wants to continue working with the president to strengthen bilateral relations.
The report says Trump's governing Republican Party lost the midterm elections. Takaichi avoids offering a direct assessment of that result, saying the Japanese government does not comment on another country's domestic affairs.
The diplomatic step is still being explored, not announced: according to the report, Takaichi is seeking bilateral talks with Trump alongside the ASEAN summit the week after next. ASEAN, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, holds regional gatherings whose related meetings also bring in leaders from outside the bloc.
Japan's prime minister and leader of the Liberal Democratic Party since October 2025. She is the first woman to hold either post.
