Rachel Nichols puts Luka's defense on Sports Illustrated's MVP ballot

Her candid look at Dončić's Lakers start joins Giants trade talk and Michael Fabiano's fantasy lineup choices across fifteen uploads.

Rachel Nichols has a personal stake in the question behind "Luka Dončić Is Changing the MVP Race | The Story with Rachel Nichols": defense helped keep him off the top of her own ballot last spring.

Now she is pointing to defensive rebounds, steals and charges taken, not just his scoring. "Personally, I'm just excited to see the player I've always so admired in May now showing up in the fall," Nichols says. Her argument is conditional: sustain this level, and Dončić and the Lakers could be in line for major postseason awards.

The clip was Sports Illustrated's most-watched new upload of the week, reaching roughly 7,600 views. In the comments, defensive effort and past MVP voting are recurring subjects. One viewer makes a useful distinction: Dončić needn't become a defensive stopper for increased effort to be noticeable.

Basketball supplied more than that single argument. Nichols and Chris Mannix also examined Memphis's unbeaten start and whether the Lakers have enough around Dončić. An Andreas Almgren New York City Marathon upload drew nearly as many views as the Luka clip.

The strongest momentum right now, though, belongs to football. Conor Orr and Albert Breer's discussion of John Harbaugh's pursuit of Jeffery Simmons and a possible Jonathan Taylor move is the busiest upload, closely followed by Michael Fabiano's Week 9 fantasy guide. Fabiano puts Jared Goff and Patrick Mahomes among his starts while raising concerns about Saquon Barkley and Stefon Diggs.

Sports Illustrated added about a thousand subscribers, a modest weekly gain. Its weekly viewing was quieter than the nearby sports-media channels, although daily views are currently above its usual level. On the channel itself, trade-deadline decisions and fantasy bench calls are keeping the football desk busy.
