CBS analyst predicts Giants, Panthers and Lions will miss playoffs

Dallas gets the nod to catch New York in a playoff forecast that has viewers questioning the NFC choices.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 127,420 views a day, 12 times a normal first day on this channel (10,383).

The AFC gets waved straight through. Asked to remove three teams from the current playoff picture, the analyst in NFL on CBS's Short replies: "In the AFC, nobody! The field is set."

That is his prediction, not a declaration that playoff places have been clinched. All his cuts come in the NFC, where the New York Giants, Carolina Panthers and Detroit Lions lose their spots on the desk's lineup of team logos.

He expects the Cowboys to catch the Giants and the Buccaneers to replace Carolina, whose play he criticizes. Detroit's exclusion comes down largely to its defense. It is a compact forecast with a particularly pointed contrast: Dallas gets a route back in, while the Lions get crossed out.

The clip drew about 78,000 views in ten hours, well beyond the channel's usual first-day audience for a Short. Its comment section was already many times busier than a typical full opening day, too.

Viewers are picking apart the choices rather than simply offering their own brackets. Several question the faith in Dallas over New York. Others ask why Detroit's defense should rule the Lions out while Minnesota's offense gets a pass. One alternative forecast drops the Vikings; another imagines the Rams sneaking into the final NFC spot.

  • I could maybe see the ravens slipping in if Jacoby plays well but that’s it for the afc, I agree that more then likely that will be the 7 teams
