A referee's curse at Trey McBride opens MMQB's Week 4 reckoning

Conor Orr and Albert Breer spent Monday on NFL officiating, and the comments filled up with plans to make referees full-time professionals.

Referees took the week. Of the fifteen uploads Sports Illustrated posted, the busiest by far was the MMQB episode titled "A Ref Said "%!&# You" to Trey McBride: And That Was Just the Beginning." In it, Conor Orr and Albert Breer work through a run of officiating trouble around the Cardinals tight end and ask what the league should do about it. Ten hours after it went up, it had more than 16,000 views, well ahead of everything else on the channel.

The comments read like a policy meeting. Several viewers want officials paid enough to work year-round, the way players and coaches do. Others bring up legal betting as a reason calls now matter more, and a few have their own game in mind: Jaguars-Bengals, Chargers-Seahawks. Two more MMQB episodes from the same Monday, one on the Eagles' thinning roster, followed close behind.

The rest of the week went to the NBA's preseason. Chris Mannix and Grant Liffmann looked at how LeBron James and Joel Embiid will share the load in Philadelphia, whether the Thunder are underrated, and Jalen Duren's extension in Detroit. UFC 332 supplied two shorts: Anthony Wint, a former NFL linebacker, reaching 2-0 six weeks after his debut, and Khaos Williams walking out to "Mama Said Knock You Out" with LL Cool J in the building.

It was a slow stretch overall. Daily views were running at about a third of the usual pace. NHL on ESPN and NFL Network were well below their usual pace too, while Fuzzy and D1 Kuumo had big weeks.
