A leatherback stuck in a swamp leads Sassy's week of tangled animals
The animal rescue clips channel added 193,000 subscribers in seven days, and fishing line, nets and a tin can keep turning up in its newest rescues.
Why this story? The channel went from 957,000 to 1,150,000 subscribers this week.
Sassy, the clips channel that gathers animal rescues filmed by people around the world, added 193,000 subscribers over the past seven days and now stands at 1.15 million. That is roughly a fifth more than a week ago. As we reported here, the channel had only just crossed a million.
The video carrying the most weight is "Helping A Giant Sea Turtle Back To Sea," posted on September 29. Near Oping Beach in Indonesia, a group of people found a leatherback sea turtle trapped in a swamp. The description says they believed it had been stuck there for two nights after coming ashore to lay eggs. They freed it and walked alongside it as it made its slow way back to the water. Leatherbacks are the largest turtles alive, and adults can weigh well over half a ton, so this was no lift-and-carry job. The clip has passed eight million views, and its latest day ran about four times faster than its usual pace.
Three newer shorts passed a million views around it. In one, a man frees a deer caught in a fence. In another, a fawn crying in a walled-off creek at Grover Cleveland Park in Caldwell, New Jersey, is lifted out so the search for its mother can begin. The biggest of the three follows a wildlife volunteer who wraps a Canada goose in a towel and cuts fishing line from its leg. According to the description, she and her husband then walked the park picking up discarded line and lures.
That thread runs through the whole week. A dolphin is cut out of a net, a turtle is pulled from netting in the Maldives' Baa Atoll, and a groundhog in the Smoky Mountains gets a can pulled off its head before the family carries the can out with them. The odd one out is an iguana found swimming miles offshore and given a ride back to land. Even its description admits nobody knows how it got that far out.
