Bomb threats against media organisations ‘very concerning’ - Tánaiste #RTÉNews
Bomb threats forced staff out of RTÉ and other media organisations on Friday, according to RTÉ News, prompting Tánaiste Simon Harris to describe the targeting of journalists' workplaces as a threat to democracy.
The broadcaster reports that an email was sent to media outlets across Ireland and Britain. Staff left its Donnybrook campus in Dublin for several hours while gardaí searched the grounds. The campus was subsequently declared safe. Mediahuis and Bauer Media also evacuated their Dublin offices as a precaution, RTÉ says.
Speaking outdoors to reporters, Harris, Ireland's deputy prime minister, said the investigation involved An Garda Síochána, the Defence Forces and cybersecurity experts. He said the matter was being taken "extraordinarily seriously" and that he remained in close contact with Taoiseach Micheál Martin about briefings.
Harris concluded: "any attack or threat of an attack on the media is a threat or an attack on our democracy."
In separate RTÉ coverage, deputy director general Adrian Lynch said the broadcaster would review its cybersecurity protocols and work with gardaí on preparations for future threats. Martin later told The Late Late Show he was confident that the following week's meetings of European leaders in Dublin would proceed safely, saying the Government was prepared for potential threats.
