Alex Staidle likes mechanical detail, but he would rather feel out a car's proportions than measure them. In Petrolicious's "Out of Proportion: Alex Staidle Draws Shopify's Race Car," that approach meets a particularly patient task: recreating digital camouflage, square by square, by hand.
The profile follows Staidle from engineering studies and rally co-driving into automotive illustration. Drawing gives him another way to stay involved with cars, without rallying's demands on his time. "I felt like cars had character if it's just freehand," he says. A binder of drawings reveals the combination of intricate machinery and humor that has become his subject matter.
This is also a promotional collaboration with Shopify. Staidle illustrates the TDS Racing Oreca LMP2 that Shopify founder Tobi Lütke drove at Le Mans, with the resulting print destined for the company's SEMA booth. Black ink comes first, then marker color. Viewers discuss owning Staidle's originals, recognize a small Honda pickup in his work and suggest another drawing that could become a sticker.
Petrolicious posted the film and a short companion this week. The full profile reached about 17,000 views and is currently the channel's busiest video. Subscribers stayed level, while daily viewing is running below its usual pace. Among nearby motoring channels, George J Saliba had a particularly large week; Evan Shanks was quieter.
Behind the new illustration film, two Jaguar stories remain active: the historically meticulous restorations in "Tom's Cars: Jaguar XKD 522 & XKD 531," and Nic Cuarta's encounter with a Proteus D-Type replica on the Pacific Coast Highway. One preserves individual fasteners; the other puts its occupants close to the noise, exhaust and coastal air.
