Both original keys are still with the stolen Volkswagen Golf GTI. For Mark McCann, that is the first puzzle in an auction purchase that becomes a search for the person who lost it.
"First twist: why have we got both original keys?" he asks while examining the blue hatchback. His new video, "HUNTING DOWN A STOLEN CAR", has drawn about 520,000 views since yesterday.
McCann buys the recovered Golf from Copart for £7,800, knowing its identifying numbers have been altered. Rather than simply repairing it, he tries to reconstruct its history: which identity belongs to the car, where it has been and who originally owned it.
The search moves between paperwork, vehicle-history checks, saved navigation destinations and garage visits. A call to Hampshire Police produces no breakthrough. The useful connection comes at The Village Garage in Stafford, where staff recognise the Golf and agree to pass his details to its original owner, Paul.
On a video call, Paul describes his house being burgled and the car being stolen. "It's just a box that's been taken away from you, and you've never heard a thing," he says. The conversation gives McCann's mechanical investigation a person at its centre: someone who has been left without answers about a familiar possession.
McCann's checks also expose a mismatch beneath the Golf's borrowed identity. He finds that the cloned registration belongs to a different Golf, a smaller-engined manual rather than this GTI. The video is sponsored by Carly, whose diagnostic scanner he uses during the investigation.
That electronic inspection supplies a particularly useful clue: although the visible identifying numbers have been altered, McCann finds the original VIN still stored in the car's engine control unit.
