Jack Maple, the bowtie-wearing subway cop, fronts PBS's five uploads
A clip from the follow-up to Ric Burns's New York documentary tells how CompStat put police where the crime was, beside a dive to Antarctica's seafloor narrated by David Tennant.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
How Jack Maple Revolutionized Policing in New York
Six hours online, and a tiny submersible was already carrying PBS toward Antarctica's seafloor. "Diving to Antarctica's Seafloor in a Tiny Sub" comes from Ages of Ice, the three-part polar series narrated by David Tennant, and it follows scientists down among glass sponges, octopuses and ancient coral. It went up on the last day of September and started fast.
The busiest new video, though, is about a policeman. "How Jack Maple Revolutionized Policing in New York" tells the story of a subway cop in a bow tie whose idea of using real-time crime data became CompStat, the system that reshaped the NYPD. The clip belongs to the two-part follow-up to New York: A Documentary Film, and its description is careful to share the credit: the economy, immigration, demographics, the fading crack epidemic and community action all play a part, and the causes of the city's fall in crime are still argued over. It passed 39,000 views in a day and a half.
The rest of the five uploads were gentler. A Mississippi River pilot in Mark Twain's Hannibal is training his grandson to take the wheel, Carlos Vives brought "La Bicicleta" to Austin City Limits, and comedian Demi Adejuyigbe told Mo Welch's Drawing Room that creativity is not going to die. Behind them, a 2018 First Civilizations episode on war and the birth of civilization keeps finding viewers, now past half a million.
Overall the channel is running well below its usual daily pace. Several of the TV channels around PBS are having lively stretches, Friends and Yellowstone Universe among them.
