Footage of earlier motorcycle falls at the same spot forms a central part of South Korea's Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) report on a fatal crash in Gwangyang. The report says emergency safety measures followed the rider's death, despite previous accidents and repeated complaints about the uneven surface.
Dashcam footage shows a motorcycle jolting and falling at a bridge road joint. The rider died, the broadcaster reports. Further recordings show motorcycles falling at the same location in August and two years earlier.
A motorcycle club representative describes a height difference of about five centimeters, saying the raised edge can destabilize a motorcycle when its rear wheel crosses it.
Reporter Kim Ha-eun then turns to an inspection report from 2023, which had already identified the uneven joint. According to the broadcast, repair work was subsequently delayed. A Gwangyang city official explains that the inspection focused primarily on structural safety, so the need for maintenance was not highlighted.
At the crash site, Kim shows newly painted lane markings and traffic cones installed as safety measures. Ha Seung-woo, a senior researcher at the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, calls for urgent assessment, corrective action and clear guidance for road users. He warns that similar fatal crashes could occur without those steps and urges inspections of roads that pose particular risks to two-wheeled vehicles.
