An off-duty police officer trying to pursue hammer-wielding jewelry robbers was struck during their escape from a shopping center in northern Italy, according to RaiNews, the news service of Italian public broadcaster RAI.

The report shows masked figures smashing and emptying display cases at Gioielli di Valenza inside the Iper shopping center in Montebello della Battaglia, in the province of Pavia. Other shops lower their shutters as people watch the raid unfold.

Bystanders try to obstruct the escape by throwing a bench into the robbers' path. The report says the off-duty officer joins the pursuit and is hit with a hammer.

One witness describes being unable to reach the 112 emergency number before turning to filming. Another says people tried to stop the robbers but could not, noting that the men carried hammers.

According to the report, three masked robbers leave the building and flee in a white car, probably driven by an accomplice. Investigators are examining camera footage to identify those involved and establish the value of the stolen jewelry.
