Targhe personalizzate anche in Italia

Italian motorists will be able to order personalized license plates, but choosing the lettering will not mean redesigning the plate itself. The standard format, typeface, colors and blue European bands will remain.

RaiNews, the news service of Italy's public broadcaster RAI, sets out the plans in Simona Giampaoli's TG1 report, "Targhe personalizzate anche in Italia" ("Personalized license plates in Italy too"). It puts the price at €600 for a car's pair of plates and €360 for a motorcycle's single rear plate.

The report describes the option as part of the new road-code provisions, made permanent through the budget package. Production will be handled by the state printing and minting institution, Poligrafico dello Stato, at facilities in Puglia and the Aosta Valley.

There is an important ownership condition: the personalized plate will stay attached to the vehicle, not the person. It will therefore not be something a driver can simply carry over to their next car.

Footage of Barbie's car and James Bond's Aston Martin illustrates the appeal of a distinctive plate. But the service is not available yet: the report says a final decree is expected next spring and gives April 30, 2027, as the planned effective date.
