Full credit card numbers, expiration dates and security codes may have been exposed after malicious code was placed on Good Smile Company's official payment page, the company says. The Japanese manufacturer is known for collectible figures, including its Nendoroid line.
Japan's TV Asahi, reporting through its All-Nippon News Network (ANN) news channel, says the company disclosed the suspected breach on October 29. Cardholder names and complete payment details belonging to about 2,800 people may have leaked.
The affected window covers card information entered between 1:55 p.m. on October 21 and 7 a.m. on October 23. Crucially, the company says the exposure may include customers who attempted to pay but never completed their transactions. The warning concerns information entered on the genuine shopping site, not a counterfeit page impersonating it.
The report distinguishes that potentially complete card information from two other sets of possibly exposed records. About 400,000 registered cards may have had their last four digits and expiration dates leaked. Separately, names, addresses and order information concerning roughly 7,600 customers may also have been exposed, the company says. Those larger totals should not be mistaken for the number of complete card credentials potentially captured.
The broadcast places the incident within a wider surge in unauthorized-access breaches in Japan. Citing security firm Macnica, it reports approximately 329 million leaked personal-information records this year, nearly a hundred times the total two years earlier. These are records, not necessarily distinct individuals. Japan's Personal Information Protection Commission describes the large-scale leaks as a serious situation.
Good Smile has apologized and says it has emailed affected customers individually. It asks those recipients to check their card statements for unfamiliar transactions and promptly contact the issuer using the number on the back of their card if they find suspicious charges.
A Japanese hobby-product manufacturer and video game developer founded in 2001. Its collectible figure lines include Nendoroid and Figma.
