Adam Kinzinger, then Kal Penn and Michelle Khare on stunts, for Jon Lovett
Wednesday's full episode of Lovett or Leave It runs from Trump's midterm speech to the Rant Wheel, and its comments keep circling back to daylight saving time.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 36,807 views a day, 8.8 times a normal first day on this channel (4,190).
Trump Goes UNHINGED, Looks Desperate in INSANE Midterms Speech
Most of what Lovett or Leave It posted in the days before stayed in the low thousands: a Barry Diller clip on old Hollywood, Jared Goldstein's war on the word "colorway," a quick riff on iced coffee at job interviews. The new full episode passed 14,000 views in its first six hours, well clear of the channel's usual start.
Its title leads with Trump's midterm speech, but that part is a minute of a show that runs past an hour. The chapters move through Ken Paxton, JD Vance, a Russian plague scare and the Sunshine Protection Act, the long-stalled bill to make daylight saving time permanent. That last one is what viewers write about most. They argue over dark winter mornings, and one points out that clocks in Arizona change in some places and not in others.
The guest list has range. Adam Kinzinger, the former Illinois congressman who was one of ten House Republicans to vote to impeach Trump in 2021 and later sat on the January 6 committee, is billed as ready to do it again. Then come Kal Penn and Michelle Khare, whose show Challenge Accepted has her training for punishing jobs and feats, talking about stunts on screen and in real life.
Penn served in the Obama White House, the same administration Lovett wrote speeches for, and one viewer is already pitching the two of them for a West Wing reboot. Others point to an unexpectedly tender moment in that conversation. One wishes Penn had been given more room to talk.
The episode closes with the Rant Wheel: personalized spam, manifesting, and how hard it is to turn a plane.
