Lovett or Leave It's newest full episode had passed 18,000 views seven hours after it went up. That is about ten times the pace of a normal first day on the channel. The title sells it on one moment from Jack Smith's Senate hearing, a Republican "gotcha" that, in the episode's telling, backfired. The description calls the week a "full Schmitt show," a play on the name of Missouri Senator Eric Schmitt.
That segment is only the opening stretch. Jon Lovett, the former Obama speechwriter who also co-hosts Pod Save America for Crooked Media, starts with the week's news: a government chatbot from the Trump White House, a pepperoncini recall and Major League Baseball in a national park.
Then come the guests. Heather Dubrow, of The Real Housewives of Orange County, and her husband Terry, a plastic surgeon, talk fame and facelifts before the show puts their marriage to a test. Laura Benanti follows, and Lovett asks her about Elsbeth and about Patti LuPone, her co-star in the 2008 Broadway revival of Gypsy, which earned them both Tonys. The Rant Wheel closes things out with loud talkers, lifeguards in sweatshirts and people who bring iced coffee to interviews.
In the comments, Amy Klobuchar's name comes up again and again. Viewers also take apart the basketball game at the center of the hearing exchange, and one points to a Katie Britt screenshot they say nobody else had shown. Several hope a running joke about algae never gets retired.
The jump belongs to this one video. The shorts posted around it sit at a few thousand views each, including one titled "This is HUMILIATING," and the channel as a whole is drawing close to its everyday number. Among those shorts, the one where Rachel Maddow describes her new documentary still leads.
