Eric Schmitt's hearing and the Trio's debut lift Bulwark Daily again

Tim Miller's Wednesday episode with Maria Comella, Sam Stein and Will Sommer drew more in eight hours than a typical new upload on the channel draws in ten days.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 366,758 views a day, 21 times a normal first day on this channel (17,588).

A senator's bad afternoon has given The Bulwark another fast-moving Bulwark Daily. The newest episode had about 178,000 views eight hours after it went up. A new upload on the channel usually gathers under 18,000 in its whole first day.

This is the third Bulwark Daily in three days to break away, as we reported here, after Bill Kristol's red-state Senate map and the midterm roadblocks episode. This one is less about maps and more about a moment. Host Tim Miller, a former Republican communications strategist, sits down with Maria Comella, once an aide to Chris Christie, to talk about Missouri senator Eric Schmitt and what the description calls possibly the biggest self-own in the history of the Senate.

The conversation then wanders, in the best podcast way. Comella and Miller look at how much of the press still offers what the episode calls fake balance. They also revisit a scandal that, in the episode's telling, knocked Christie out as the 2016 frontrunner. Miller tells the story of a kiss he wanted and never got.

The second half is a first. The Trio, the outlet's MAGA-world beat team of Miller, Sam Stein and Will Sommer, joins the daily show together for the first time, offering a sample of the right-wing gossip they cover. Stein spent years at HuffPost and Politico, and Sommer is known for his reporting on conspiracy movements.

In the comments, most viewers are talking about the hearing itself, and in particular about Jack Smith's answers to Schmitt, with his flat one-word replies singled out again and again. Several compare it to the Four Seasons Total Landscaping press conference of 2020. Others nominate it for a Saturday Night Live cold open.

The rest of the channel kept a steadier pace. A national security episode with former CIA officer Marc Polymeropoulos and Michael Weiss, posted the following day, was near 19,000 views.
