Ernest Bailes puts the purpose plainly: "We will put partisanship aside. We will work together for what is best for the kids of the state of Texas." The Republican former state representative is joining Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa's transition team, giving a concrete face to her promise of bipartisan government.
Hook Global's upload of the press conference, credited to the Associated Press, drew about 413,000 views in its first day, roughly two dozen times the channel's usual start for regular videos. Behind the title's promised "surprise inclusion" is a discussion centered on public education, workers and preparing to govern.
Joe Madden will lead the transition as executive director. Ryan Pollock, executive director of the Texas Building Trades Council, brings organized labor into the group, saying: "This is about an economy that works for all Texans." Tamila Barksdale is also introduced as a key transition figure.
Hinojosa's cross-party pledge comes with a smaller Texas joke: the team includes both an Aggie and a Longhorn. But her answer to reporters is more direct. "People are tired of the divisions, of the fighting, tired of the culture wars," she says.
Asked about the handover from Greg Abbott, Hinojosa reports cooperation rather than obstruction: "Greg Abbott has been gracious and made sure to make me understand that they are going to fully cooperate with this transition."
