A hat wall, a music room and the sea: Susan and Ryan Shand's Santa Barbara house

The mother and daughter behind Shand Design show the house that was rebuilt from nothing, and viewers are already asking to see Ryan's place next.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 54,768 views a day, 12 times a normal first day on this channel (4,634).

"Inside a Dreamy Santa Barbara Home Designed by a Mother-Daughter Team" is the newest house tour on Homeworthy, Alison's channel about people and the places they call home. The hosts are interior designer Susan Shand and her daughter Ryan, who run Shand Design together as co-owners. The house they open up is Susan's own.

It did not start out dreamy. The description says it was a neglected property, rebuilt from the ground up and planned around its view of the ocean. Today it holds a family music room, a large kitchen, a secret garden, a pool and Susan's hat wall, which the description calls iconic, along with antiques, books, artwork and finds from trips abroad. The channel's own tags file it under "Nancy Meyers style," a fair hint at the mood: generous rooms, soft colors, a kitchen you would like to cook in.

The tour passed 33,000 views in its first ten hours. A new Homeworthy video usually ends a whole day below 5,000, and five other tours that went up on the same day, from a Dallas Tudor to a maximalist Birmingham house, are all moving at that familiar pace.

In the comments, viewers point to the before pictures and the vision it took to get from there to here. One spotted messages spelled out in Scrabble tiles, another the mugs, toys and sculptures from other countries. And more than one would like Ryan to give a tour of her own home next.
