Video taking off 5.3x its usual first day

Los Angeles, San Diego and 'An Unprecedented Attack by a U.S. President' from Heather Cox Richardson

A clip from her Tuesday Politics Chat drew about twenty times the comments her Shorts usually gather on a first day, and many of them are about a cheering crowd.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 189,644 views a day, 5.3 times a normal first day on this channel (35,739).

Heather Cox Richardson's Shorts are usually small slices of her twice-weekly Politics Chat, the live sessions where the historian takes viewers' questions every Tuesday and Thursday at 6 pm Maine time. "An Unprecedented Attack by a U.S. President" comes from the October 6 chat, and in its first 24 hours it reached close to 190,000 views, more than five times what a Short here normally manages.

The title does not spell out its subject, but her written letter for the same day does. In "Panic," posted alongside, she describes widespread outcry over the president's suggestion that a nuclear attack on Los Angeles and San Diego would be acceptable. The comments under the Short show that this is the moment viewers came for. The talk there keeps returning to two things: whether words like these should cost a president his office, and the crowd that cheered when he said them. That second point gets almost as much attention as the remark itself.

The comment section filled about twenty times faster than on her usual first day, with more than a thousand comments where a Short here usually collects around fifty. Another Short from the same days, "The Chilling Laughter at the Nebraska Rally," also turns to the reaction in the room.

The rest of the channel's day ran well below its usual pace, which makes this one clip stand out all the more. Richardson, a historian of the Civil War, Reconstruction and the Republican Party, has built her audience on placing the news of the day inside a longer American story, and this time her viewers met her with questions about where that story goes.
