Gina Hinojosa tells supporters that voters have delivered a mandate for change. Republican state Representative Brian Harrison wants Greg Abbott to call lawmakers back before she takes office, seeking to limit the emergency powers she would inherit.
That proposed change to the governor's authority is the focus of a FOX 4 Dallas-Fort Worth report that drew about 177,000 views in its first day, far beyond the station's usual audience for a regular video. Its comment section was more than a hundred times busier than a typical first day.
Reporter Amelia Jones sets out Harrison's argument: he objects both to Abbott's past exercise of emergency powers and to Hinojosa's stated intention to use them. The request is for a special legislative session before the handover, not a restriction already enacted.
Attorney General-Elect Nathan Johnson rejects the effort, describing it as an illegitimate attempt to retain power. The report also identifies parallel proposals from Senate Republicans to strip powers from Lieutenant Governor-Elect Vicki Goodwin, extending the dispute beyond the governor's office.
TCU political science professor Keith Gaddie offers an institutional reason for restraint: preserving the powers of an office can benefit either party when control changes hands. Jones closes with the date around which these proposals revolve: Hinojosa is scheduled to be inaugurated on January 19, 2027.
