New York's "super" El Niño winter could bring less snow
CBS New York's Vanessa Murdock forecasts below-average snowfall for Central Park, while experts explain why a major storm is still possible.

First Alert Weather's "super" El Niño seasonal snow forecast
Central Park could get 18 to 28 inches of snow this winter, according to CBS New York's First Alert forecast. But anyone hoping that means they can forget about blizzards should listen to the rest of Vanessa Murdock's report.
The outlook puts the park below its seasonal snowfall average. The complication is how storms and cold air line up: the National Weather Service's Nelson Vaz explains that the Pacific jet stream will steer storms across the southern United States and toward the region. Enough cold air arriving at the right moment can still produce a major snowfall. The report recalls the record January 2016 blizzard as a reminder.
El Niño is the warming phase of a tropical Pacific climate pattern, with effects far beyond that ocean. A particularly strong one does not turn a seasonal snow forecast into a certainty. Rutgers climatologist John Krasting puts it plainly: "I wouldn't advise anybody to put money on a seasonal forecast in any year."
The report drew roughly 44,000 views in its first day, far beyond the channel's usual start for a Short. In the comments, practical winter concerns take over: one viewer wants snow canceled, another would accept cold and snow without the wind, and a retired letter carrier welcomes the chance to enjoy snowfall without having to deliver mail through it.
The warming phase of a climate pattern involving tropical Pacific sea temperatures and winds. Its effects reach beyond the tropics, and its occurrence is difficult to predict.
