"You guys got to pay attention, man. That's ridiculous," the LAPD helicopter pilot says over the radio. The warning anchors KTLA 5's report on a close encounter with a U.S. Navy helicopter above Echo Park.

Reporter Hailey Winslow describes the police helicopter maneuvering out of the path of a Navy Sikorsky Nighthawk on Tuesday afternoon. Both aircraft were flying at around 800 feet, according to the report. The studio introduction says the approaching military helicopter had failed to respond to radio calls.

Rather than footage of the encounter itself, the segment presents cockpit radio audio over flight-path graphics. Winslow then reads an LAPD statement setting out the timeline and attempts at communication.

An aviation expert explains the principle behind keeping helicopters apart outside controlled airspace: pilots use designated radio frequencies, but also rely on looking for other aircraft. "Basically it's VFR, it's called see and avoid," he says.

The report drew an estimated 166,000 views in its first day, roughly ten times KTLA's usual audience for regular videos. Its comment section was also much busier than usual, with viewers asking about communication between the aircraft.

At the end of her report, Winslow says the Navy had not yet responded to the incident.
