"Teaching middle school is the best preparation for politics," James Talarico tells the crowd celebrating his Texas Senate victory. The former San Antonio teacher gets a classroom joke into a speech that connects his public-school experience, religious upbringing and plans for Washington.
FOX 26 Houston's full recording has drawn about 55,000 views in 22 hours, far beyond the station's usual first-day audience for a regular video. It follows Talarico's defeat of Republican Ken Paxton.
At a podium bearing the words "LOVE THY NEIGHBOR," Talarico presents the campaign as a David-and-Goliath story, with voters supplying the means to overcome wealthy donors. "The people of Texas were my slingshot," he says.
He recalls his grandfather, a Baptist preacher, and makes love of neighbor the connecting idea between faith and public service. The speech then shifts toward economic power: Talarico argues that the country's central divide runs between those at the top and those at the bottom, rather than simply between left and right.
His legislative priorities arrive late in the speech: getting big money out of politics, universal healthcare, investment in education and ending endless wars. Before that, he points to campaign volunteers distributing bottled water, school supplies and food, giving his message of service a practical example.
The station's election-night watch-party report and its Short on Gina Hinojosa's gubernatorial victory also drew unusually large audiences. In Talarico's full speech, the celebration becomes a statement of what he wants to do with the Senate seat.
