Video taking off 14x its usual first day

Michael King, one inning from a save, and a Brewers sweep on the line

ESPN MLB's Short of the ninth inning in Padres-Brewers Game 3 passed 100,000 views in under a day, and Boston fans turned up in the comments to cheer Xander Bogaerts.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 106,372 views a day, 14 times a normal first day on this channel (7,461).

ESPN MLB cut the whole top of the ninth from Game 3 of the NLDS between the Milwaukee Brewers and the San Diego Padres into a single Short, and gave it a confident title: "MUST-SEE FINAL INNING." The setup is simple. Michael King is on the mound for San Diego looking to close out the save, and Milwaukee is three outs from sweeping the series.

That inning reached a little over 100,000 views in its first 23 hours. A Short on this channel usually ends its first day somewhere around 7,500. The comment section moved faster than usual too, and most of it is people replaying the inning. Viewers argue about a Milwaukee double play that came with two runners on, praise King's nerve or say he nearly let it slip, and Padres supporters joke about the pills they needed to get through it.

The warmest thread belongs to Xander Bogaerts. Red Sox fans showed up under a Padres clip to salute the shortstop who won two World Series in Boston, in 2013 and 2018, before he moved to San Diego.

It was a busy October day on the channel. A Short of the Dodgers taking Game 3 against the Braves also ran well ahead of normal, and so did Stephen A. Smith's First Take warning that Aaron Boone could lose his job if the Yankees were swept. The Brewers-Padres ninth drew more than either.
