DC Rainmaker asks whether Zwift's scenery earns the upgrade

Real-world video routes and adaptive coaching share a subscription tier, but Ray Maker questions the extra monthly cost.

Things we can learn from the video

Press to jump

  1. 0:46Video Routes launches with 21 courses, with more routes planned each month.
  2. 3:39Video quality reaches 4K, but a bandwidth drop can replace the scenery with orange terrain.
  3. 7:13Zwift Coach adapts training to goals and schedules while incorporating existing structured workouts.
  4. 11:29A car-mounted dual-camera rig captures routes; interrupted takes require starting again.
  5. 15:08Maker praises video quality but questions whether the two features justify the higher subscription price.

A dropped connection can turn a scenic ride into orange terrain. Ray Maker puts that less picturesque possibility into his Zwift Plus review, testing video quality alongside the new tier's adaptive coaching rather than simply admiring the roads.

"Zwift Plus Review (Real Video Routes+ Zwift Coach): Worth It?" was DC Rainmaker's most-watched new upload, reaching roughly 212,000 views. Maker rides through the details: avatars can obscure the scenery when drafting, the video supports 4K, and Zwift Coach adjusts training around goals and schedules. He also makes a useful distinction: the coaching isn't using AI.

The route-making footage offers another kind of workout. Zwift's car-mounted dual-camera rig records carefully controlled takes, with interruptions requiring a complete do-over. Maker praises the resulting video quality, but isn't convinced the routes alone justify another $10 a month.

Viewers are working through that same purchasing decision. Comments ask for coaching and routes to be sold separately, raise the absence of family plans, and weigh the upgrade against existing training subscriptions. One rider's alternative is rather more outdoorsy: warm clothes and lights.

The week's other upload, "Which Edge 1060 Features Go to Previous Edge Units?!?", tackles the Garmin owner's familiar question of what can improve without replacing the hardware. Those two releases are the channel's busiest videos right now, followed by September's detailed Fenix 9 review.

DC Rainmaker added subscribers over the week, although daily viewing is currently below its usual level. Among nearby tech channels, SAMTIME had a much larger viewing week; DC Rainmaker sat around the middle of the group, with its attention centered on indoor riding and Garmin upgrades.

What viewers say

  • For this price I prefer to buy warm clothes and lights at decathlon and ride outside
  • They should split them like add the video routes for 5 bucks or add the coach - then allow you to turn those on / off when you like …

  • Just need to find out if the coach will replace Xert - I'd save money then

  • Still no discounted child, family or a team plans
  • I started out my indoor training on Tacx back in 2011 and loved the videos so much they were excellent quality. I never liked the Zwift training plans though as everything felt gimmicky, but think I might give it a go anyway. It’s certainly cheaper than trainer road plus Zwift.
  • kudos to the game developers here, such an awesome job. I bet shooting Sa Calobra was also very difficult to shoot in one take!

  • Great explanation as usual, thanks Ray.
