Thumos at the Acropolis: Rubio tells the West it grew "ashamed"
The Secretary of State's Athens address drew well over a thousand comments within hours, where a C-SPAN Short usually gathers a few dozen on its whole first day.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 399,976 views a day, 23 times a normal first day on this channel (17,470).
Rubio: West has become "ashamed" of what made it exceptional
A C-SPAN Short normally finishes its first day somewhere under 20,000 views. Marco Rubio's warning to the West passed 180,000 in its first seven hours, and it did so while the channel as a whole was having a quieter day than usual.
The clip comes from the Secretary of State's address in Athens. The channel's Washington Today roundup places it on Pnyx Hill, the rocky rise facing the Acropolis where the citizens of ancient Athens met as an assembly. Rubio's argument, as the description lays it out, is that Western nations came to feel ashamed of their own history, let their militaries weaken and handed too much sovereignty to global institutions. To make the point he reached for an old Greek word, "thumos", which he described as passion, strength, courage and pride. Plato used the same word for the spirited part of the soul. Rubio closed on a choice: act now, or lose the chance to act at all.
A second Short from the same speech, built around America's debt to ancient Greece, also climbed well past the channel's usual pace. In that one Rubio points to the Greek columns and porticoes all over Washington and to founders who were steeped in antiquity.
The comment section turned into an argument about what built the West in the first place. Some point to democracy, free markets and treaties, others to a strong middle class, and many of them turn the conversation to the November elections.
