Coco bread too: Jamaican beef patties for a Korean mom and dad

The dish that fed her through college in Toronto, rebuilt from scratch with tips from Caribbean cooking creators, became the week's most watched upload at close to 280,000 views.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

A usual day on Crazy Korean Cooking brings in a little under half a million views. This week came in a touch above that, and nearly all of the new energy came from one plate.

The plate was Jamaican beef patties. In the description, the cook behind the channel says they carried her through her college years in Toronto and guesses she ate thousands of them. So she set out to make them for her parents. She credits Feed and Teach, Racquel's Caribbean Cuisine and Morris Time Cooking for tips. The description also tells the patty's history: Chinese Jamaican bakers turned it into a business, with Tastee opening in Kingston in 1966, and in 1985 Toronto's Jamaican community won a fight over whether the word "patty" could stay on the label.

The four uploads are really two, each posted twice: the cooking video and the tasting video, one copy with hashtags and one without. The hashtagged cooking video is doing the work. It is the channel's busiest video by a wide margin and still adds tens of thousands of views a day. The others have mostly settled. The comments keep coming back to one detail: she baked the coco bread too, the soft folded bun many Jamaicans eat wrapped around a patty. Viewers who say they grew up with the dish admit they have never made it themselves, and one popular question asks whether she is a professional chef.

Behind the patties, a fifteen-day-old video of spicy yaki udon is still drawing a crowd. It is the aunt's recipe that her sister makes about every other week.

Among cooking channels of a similar size, Sam Jose is having an enormous week and Caked by Rach is well above its usual pace, while sweet bread is running quieter. Crazy Korean Cooking sits steady in the middle, with subscribers still coming in.
