Fleet Week ship tours begin in San Francisco; here’s a look inside the USS Ashland
Fleet Week gave KPIX its most watched new report. Drew Andre went aboard the USS Ashland at Pier 35 as the public ship tours opened, in a city the description says expects nearly a million visitors for the week. The Ashland is a Navy amphibious ship, built to carry Marines and the landing craft that take them ashore, so the tour is less about gleaming decks than about how a floating staging base is laid out.
The rest of the station's day was harder news. A small plane with two people aboard crashed just after taking off from Petaluma Municipal Airport on Wednesday morning, and the scene video drew almost exactly as many views as the ship tour. The station also marked three years since the October 7 attacks.
Then there was the weather, which has been its own running story. Jessica Burch's morning forecast kept the heat advisory in place, with some inland spots back in triple digits. By evening, Zoe Mintz was promising a huge cooldown on Friday.
All told, the channel posted 15 videos and added about a thousand subscribers. Daily views are running well below the station's usual pace, a slower stretch shared by FOX 2 Detroit, FOX 29 Philadelphia and CBS Philadelphia. FOX 32 Chicago is the one station nearby in size holding close to its normal level, and NBCLA gathered the most views of the group over the week.
