Spain train received all-clear despite red signal, officials say
CBS Pittsburgh's report pairs officials' account of a signaling malfunction with survivors' memories of the collision in Toledo province.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 35,130 views a day, 16 times a normal first day on this channel (2,155).
High-speed train crash in Spain kills at least 68 and injures dozens, officials say
Patricia Alvarez remembers her train stopping before the collision. "We were stopped there for about 20 minutes before the accident," she says in CBS Pittsburgh's report. After it departed, she recalls, the crash came within minutes.
At least 68 people were killed and dozens injured when a high-speed train struck the rear of another train that had stopped in central Spain, according to local authorities. Two cars derailed.
Reporter Laura Aguirre says Spain's transport minister described a signaling malfunction that triggered an automatic stop for trains in the area. Spanish officials say one train then received the all-clear to proceed despite a red stop signal remaining in place, before striking the train ahead on the same track.
The report drew about 16,000 views in its opening seven hours, already well beyond the station's usual first-day audience for a Short.
Drone footage shows the derailed carriages, while ground-level images follow emergency workers and rescued passengers. Survivors describe the impact and the injured people around them; others are shown being transported to nearby Urda. Alvarez says she believes sitting on the left side kept her from being thrown into the air, as emergency teams continue searching the wreckage.
Urda is a municipality in Toledo province, in Spain’s Castile-La Mancha region.
