Coast Guard searches for missing plane off the coast of Nantucket
The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a medical plane that was flying from Bermuda to Boston and went missing near Nantucket on Saturday morning. CBS Boston, the YouTube home of WBZ-TV News, posted a short on the search as part of its weekend coverage. Within twelve hours it had passed 60,000 views. A short on this channel usually ends its whole first day at around 2,500.
By Sunday the station had a longer report. In it, WBZ's Paul Burton describes the aircraft as a medical transport jet that vanished early Saturday with six people on board, and the Coast Guard's search as one that has moved out over the ocean. That follow-up had only just gone up.
The comments under the first short came in at an unusual pace for this channel: around forty in half a day, where its shorts typically collect two in a full one. Many of them are prayers for the people on board. Others ask questions: how long a trip it is from Bermuda to Boston, and whether air traffic control should be able to narrow down where the plane was last tracked. A few viewers bring up the Bermuda Triangle.
It was a weekend when much of the station's news came from the water. Another WBZ report covered a 30-foot boat that hit rocks near Singing Beach in Manchester-by-the-Sea on Saturday night, leaving one man dead and another missing.
