About $3 billion of the cryptocurrency stolen from Binance has been frozen, but the remaining assets are still with the hackers, correspondent Joe Tidy reports for BBC News, the British Broadcasting Corporation's news service in the United Kingdom.
The report puts the theft at $6.3 billion. Tidy describes it as the biggest hack in history and suggests it could be the largest single theft of any kind.
Binance serves both as an exchange, where people trade digital coins, and as a platform for storing them. According to the company's account, relayed by Tidy, hackers thought to be from North Korea gained access to a developer's laptop and used that access to divert the assets. The report does not establish the attackers' identity independently.
Freezing part of the haul means those assets should be safe, Tidy explains, rather than available for the attackers to move. He closes with Binance's assurance that it will cover all losses and that customer funds are safe.
An international cryptocurrency exchange founded in 2017 by Changpeng Zhao. It is the largest exchange by daily cryptocurrency trading volume and has no official headquarters.
