Crew reported managing ice before fatal Florida jet crash
ABC7's report pairs air traffic control recordings with John Nance's explanation of how ice can alter an aircraft's handling.

New details after 9 killed in private jet crash in Florida
ABC7 brings the crew's weather reports into its coverage of the private jet crash that killed nine people in Palm Beach County. In audio played during Alison Kosik's report, a crew member tells air traffic control: "We're managing the ice, but it is moderate turbulence."
The Bahamas-bound flight had departed Austin, Texas. Kosik reports that the crew encountered icing, turbulence and precipitation and requested permission to climb. Dashcam footage shows the Learjet descending steeply before impact.
"This aircraft was out of control," aviation expert John Nance says. He explains that ice can change an aircraft's flight characteristics, leaving pilots handling a plane that responds differently. The report does not establish what caused the crash; it describes NTSB investigators preparing to begin their work.
The upload has reached about 350,000 views, an unusually fast start for an ABC7 Short. Separate reports showing the crash and identifying one of the pilots have also drawn substantially larger early audiences than the channel's usual Shorts.
Kosik's report also follows the damage on the ground: downed power lines, a struck mobile home and a crater in the road. Hundreds of nearby residents needed overnight shelter, and officials estimated that repairing the roadway would take a month.
