James Talarico has won Texas's U.S. Senate contest, defeating Republican Ken Paxton. An election-eve report from Australian broadcaster 9 News Australia captures the campaigning before that result, with Democratic volunteers presenting the vote as a chance to put limits on President Donald Trump.
Correspondent Reid Butler follows door-knocking volunteers and visits a Texas bar and campaign rallies. Democrat volunteer Tarushi Mittal explains her concern: "I think he's hoping that if the Republicans win, he can continue managing the country unchecked." Another woman identifies herself as a Republican and says she is very concerned about what will happen to the state.
Talarico, a Democratic state representative, addresses supporters beneath "TAKE BACK TEXAS" signs. Paxton, Texas's attorney general and the Republican nominee, offers a sharply different pitch. "James Talarico, simply put, is a Democratic socialist," he tells an event. Butler also reports that Elon Musk is financially backing Paxton.
The report contrasts those campaign scenes with Trump's appearance at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington. Trump praises its renovation and jokes about renaming it the "Trump Reflecting Pool", immediately adding that he is kidding.
Outside the Capitol, Washington correspondent Lauren Tomasi describes the midterms as a referendum on Trump's party and presidency. Posted before voting, "US midterm election countdown | 9 News Australia" records the arguments and anxieties ahead of the count, rather than reporting Talarico's eventual victory.
