Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan’s U.S. Senate race #shorts
Abdul El-Sayed introduces himself by his full name, Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed, before adding the title the cheering crowd has been waiting to hear: Michigan's senator-elect.
Zeteo's Short captures both the formality and the humor of that moment. Throughout the campaign, El-Sayed explains, he had said "Inshallah," meaning "God willing." With victory secured, he says it is time for "Alhamdulillah," or "Praise be to God." He then supplies the translation for right-wing commentators as the audience chants his name.
The Democrat defeated Republican Mike Rogers, keeping the seat in Democratic hands and becoming the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate. The clip drew roughly 820,000 views in 21 hours, far beyond Zeteo's usual Short audience. Its comment section was also many times busier than a typical first day.
But the excerpt is not only an introduction or a celebration. El-Sayed names taking money out of politics and Medicare for All among his movement's goals, then thanks the volunteers and voters who backed him. "You took a chance on the unlikeliest of candidates," he tells them. "This is all yours."
Zeteo's broader coverage from Michigan drew an unusually large audience too: Mehdi Hasan and Prem Thakker's election broadcast passed a million views. A separate Short carries El-Sayed's pointed message to Donald Trump about learning to call him senator.
