Judge orders DOJ back to court after Trump vows to close East Potomac golf course
A pledge to close a Washington golf course has put an earlier assurance to a federal judge under scrutiny. According to WUSA9, Judge Ana Reyes ordered Justice Department officials back to court after President Donald Trump announced that East Potomac Golf Links would close on November 15.
The problem is the contradiction. WUSA9 reports that a top official had told Reyes the previous week there was no plan to close the course on that date. Trump's announcement came hours after the judge temporarily halted tree removal while a legal challenge proceeds.
Reporting from the course, Chief Investigative Reporter Eric Flack describes Trump's response: the president called the ruling unconstitutional and said the Interior Department would appeal. Flack also reports that hundreds of additional trees are slated for removal by the National Park Service, pending the legal fight. The order stopping tree cutting and the announced closure are distinct parts of the dispute.
The report reached about 168,000 views in seven hours, far beyond WUSA9's usual first-day audience for short uploads. An earlier report on the tree-cutting injunction also drew an unusually large audience for the station's Shorts.
The follow-up goes beyond whether work can continue: WUSA9's studio update says Reyes wants Justice Department officials to explain why the president's announced closure date conflicts with the account previously given to her.
