Runners stretch on the grass, check their phones and wait beside a sign for Corral B. The marathon has not started for them yet, but FOX 5 New York's camera is already rolling.

Behind the spare title "LIVE: NYC event camera" is a ground-level view of the New York City Marathon's starting village. The stream drew about 23,000 views in its first eight hours, an unusually fast start compared with the station's other long broadcasts.

Much of what the camera captures is the practical business of getting runners ready. Announcements in French, German, Italian and Spanish explain corral assignments, clothing donation bins and emergency procedures. An English reminder supplies a particularly specific piece of race-day housekeeping: clothing will not be collected on the bridge.

Then the atmosphere changes. Over the loudspeakers, New York Road Runners CEO Rob Simmelkjaer introduces the elite runners, with names including Hellen Obiri and Sharon Lokedi. Lokedi won this race on her marathon debut in 2022, a reminder of the extraordinary athletes sharing the morning with the runners waiting on the grass.

After the national anthem, participants cheer, hug and gather their belongings before moving toward the corrals. FOX 5's camera stays with that less-televised part of marathon morning: the preparations before anyone can settle into a stride.
