Woodsbound Outdoors turns mushroom soup into backpack-ready slabs
Morels and chanterelles go from the pot to sealed bags in the most-watched of four new uploads.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Freeze drying cream of wild mushroom with my new Harvest Right Freeze Dryer - Countertop 360
Woodsbound Outdoors cooks enough soup to fill a freeze dryer, then runs into an entirely understandable problem: eating it first. "We ended up eating too much of it. Mostly me, couldn't help myself," he says.
The week's most-watched upload starts with the finished article outdoors: a dry slab of cream of wild mushroom soup destined for a backpacking meal. Back in the kitchen, he rehydrates morels and chanterelles, saves their liquid for the broth, and builds a creamy soup with sautéed onions, thyme and chicken stock. Chicken noodle soup fills the remaining tray space before the finished batches are broken into pieces and sealed in bags with oxygen absorbers.
This is also a product showcase: Harvest Right supplied the countertop freeze dryer for him to try. The comments find plenty else to discuss, from a joke about soup tasting flat to suggestions for wild rice and doubts that a batch would survive uneaten long enough to reach the machine.
The soup has drawn about 286,000 views. Elsewhere in the four-upload week, "Making a bushcraft survival torch" and "Making black walnut dye" explore other uses for woodland materials, while the newly posted "A tree that's more useful than its fruit - Osage Orange" adds a tree profile.
The audience is growing, with 10,000 subscribers added over the week, and daily views are running at nearly twice their usual level. Among nearby outdoor channels, Self Sufficient Me is also having a busier-than-usual day, while Mav is quieter. On Woodsbound Outdoors itself, October's "Cooking squirrel stew in a pumpkin" remains the most active individual upload, drawing slightly more daily views than the new mushroom soup.
