Bloodhounds and Blue Heelers: Will Atherton's breed histories find a crowd
Three uploads went up, two of them breed histories, and the cattle dog episode turned its comments into a swap of heeler stories from Australia and beyond.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
THE HISTORY OF THE AUSTRALIAN CATTLE DOG
A usual day on Will Atherton's channel brings in somewhere around 57,000 views. Lately it has been closer to 82,000, and the reason sits in his newest series: the histories of dog breeds.
The freshest one, "THE HISTORY OF THE BLOODHOUND," went up on October 2 and was already gathering views faster than anything else he has up within its first day. Before it came "THE HISTORY OF THE AUSTRALIAN CATTLE DOG," the most watched of the three new uploads, and a week earlier the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon got the same treatment. Sandwiched between them was something different, "BILLIONAIRE DOG TRAINER," a title that gives away little and has settled into a quieter pace.
The cattle dog episode is the one people are talking under. The breed's dingo ancestry comes up, and so does a warning many owners repeat in their own words: these are working dogs, and a city flat with a bandanna is not the life they were bred for. Others simply tell their stories, from a dog that took its owner from no running at all to fifty miles a week, to a part-heeler mutt working as a service dog. And the requests are already in: a kelpie, please, and a Turkish Kangal.
Among the pets and animals channels around his size, this is one of the quieter weeks; Sassy and Brighter Paws are running at roughly double their usual pace, on a very different kind of video. Will's subscriber count held steady at about 1.2 million, his audience spending its time on breed history, one dog at a time.

@hyperion-MDSee it on YouTubeI love your descriptions of breeds. Succinct and real, no fluff. Everyone considering a dog should listen to these and consider their choices. Sadly, too many people still go for looks, end up with chewed tires and herded children, and wonder what's wrong with the dog.
