Fifty thousand texts in Cari Farver's name: True Lives revisits an Omaha case
The ITV Studios documentary channel also posted a 2010 film about circus animal trainers and a 2023 film on a Durham, North Carolina, murder.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
The Killer Who Sent 50,000 Texts to Cover Up Her Crime | True Lives
Three documentaries went up on True Lives, the ITV Studios channel for real-life films, and the newest is the one drawing the most viewers each day.
It tells the case of Cari Farver, who disappeared in Omaha, Nebraska, in November 2012. For months afterward, messages sent in her name claimed she had chosen to leave. The film follows how investigators traced those messages back through digital forensics, and how a woman connected to Cari's boyfriend was eventually convicted.
The other two are older films with a new audience. A 2023 episode covers the 2007 killing of Denita Smith, a 25-year-old graduate student in Durham, North Carolina. A 2010 film, the week's most watched upload, looks at people who train big cats and elephants, including a Wisconsin teacher who gave up his job in 1974 to buy an elephant and later died in a performance. Its comment section is largely a debate about whether wild animals belong in circuses at all.
The channel as a whole is drawing several times its usual daily views, more than these new films account for, and it is not clear which video set that off. Among true crime channels of similar size, Matthew Cox, Beyond Evil and Danielle Kirsty are also running well above their usual pace, while Catching Killers is steady.
