Escaped prisoner's truck found in Illinois as manhunt widens
TODAY's Maggie Vespa reports on the search for Jacob Morley, with Marion's police chief saying his connection to the city remains unclear.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 235,819 views a day, 48 times a normal first day on this channel (4,918).
Investigators Find Abandoned Truck of Escaped Prisoner
Marion police know an escaped Tennessee prisoner reached their Illinois community. What they cannot explain is why he went there.
In TODAY's report, NBC's Maggie Vespa says investigators found the landscaping truck authorities say Jacob Morley stole after leaving prison. It was abandoned more than 140 miles away in Marion, shifting attention to a community with no known ties to the convicted killer.
Police Chief David Fitts points to the nearby interstate as one possible explanation, suggesting Morley might have pulled off because he was running low on gas. That remains a possibility, not an established account of his route. "It's terribly frustrating to know that he was here and we didn't know it," Fitts says.
The report also gives space to the people living with the uncertainty. Carrie Norman, the sister of a murder victim, says she fears for her safety. Fitts describes calls from concerned schools and parents as authorities search the surrounding Shawnee National Forest.
The bulletin drew roughly 190,000 views before its first full day was over, far beyond TODAY's usual start for a Short. Its reports on Spain's train disaster and stranded cruise passengers also drew unusually large audiences.
Vespa returns to the unanswered question at the prison: how Morley got past the perimeter fence unnoticed. State prison officials say that remains under investigation.
