Gavin Newsom doesn't announce a presidential campaign on Jimmy Kimmel's couch. He does name someone whose decision would keep him out: Kamala Harris.
"There's no scenario where the two of us are going to be up on the same stage running against each other," Newsom says, citing their longtime friendship. The interview drew about 1.3 million views since yesterday.
Kimmel puts the presidential question directly to him nearly ten minutes into the conversation. Newsom discusses the timeline for 2028 and jokes about his children's reluctance to see his political career continue, before making his position on Harris clear. It's a conditional answer, not a declaration of candidacy.
Before that, the conversation is firmly on the approaching midterms. "This is going to be a blue tsunami," Newsom predicts. He alleges that Trump is meddling in elections and describes California's preparations to protect voting, including lawyers, volunteers and a hotline for reporting problems. His argument is that a decisive voting margin is the strongest response to the interference he anticipates.
This is a different offering from Kimmel's separately posted monologue about Trump's reluctance to endorse JD Vance: here, the governor gets room to explain his own plans and expectations, with Kimmel asking the questions.
The closing stretch moves away from campaign calculations. Kimmel asks about ocean temperatures, El Niño and California's preparations for extreme weather, then brings the interview back to late-night territory with a joke about Newsom's hair.
