Nicki Minaj, a radar-inventing uncle and a citizen's arrest in Kimmel's midterm monologue

Trump supplied the setups. Jimmy Kimmel's election-week monologue leans heavily on rally and news footage, and much of his job is standing next to it: a president announcing "My uncle invented radar. Can you believe it?", a Michigan crowd hearing a remark about Nicki Minaj's body, a former president mocking the White House décor in Detroit.

The Minaj moment arrives a little past the five-minute mark, from Trump's rally in Port Huron. Barack Obama follows from a Detroit campaign stop for Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, with the line that has traveled all week: "He's got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory." Kimmel then plays Trump's reply from a press conference.

In between, Kimmel squeezes in his own jokes. When Trump says the country was losing people "to death," Kimmel answers: "I lost my grandmother to death." When Trump offers a $1,000,000 reward on Truth Social for reports of voter fraud, Kimmel responds by placing the president under citizen's arrest. The closing segment is a parody video in which Trump renames landmarks, objects and people across the country, built on news Kimmel shares about Trump asking Google to rename the Atlantic Ocean.

The monologue passed four million views in a day, far beyond what a regular Kimmel upload usually draws, and comments arrived about ten times faster than usual. Much of the talk circles the Obama roast. Some viewers insist on getting the line right, since the joke was about Saddam Hussein opening the restaurant, not the White House being one. Others write in from Britain, France and Japan, urging Americans to vote.

It sits in a busy week for the show. Foo Fighters are performing every night, and Dave Grohl used his chair to tell the story of poaching drummer Taylor Hawkins from Alanis Morissette's band.
