The heckle came from the crowd at Donald Trump's rally in Corinth, Mississippi, and it was aimed at his ballroom. By the time Jimmy Kimmel was done with it, the line was printed on a red novelty T-shirt, with the last word held back for a second reveal.
That shirt is the centerpiece of a monologue posted October 28 that passed 3.7 million views in its first day, far beyond a usual start for a regular upload here. It carried a channel whose overall daily views had otherwise been running below their usual pace.
The road to the shirt is crowded. Kimmel opens with the year's trending costume ideas, then turns to Donald Trump Jr.'s reported hunting trip to Mongolia with Russian businessman Umar Kremlev. "Pretty much everything the Trumps do is counter to intelligence," he says. With the midterms close, he plays Trump's repeated claim that Texas Senate candidate James Talarico is vegan, followed by the president's own carnivore credentials: "I love the meat. Ahhh!"
Then the tone shifts. Kimmel shows a campaign video in which two Canadian mayoral candidates, Zainab Azim and Gordon Krantz, appear together, and Krantz offers a line rarely heard in the American clips around it: "We can disagree without degrading one another."
The closer sends a producer down Hollywood Boulevard with the simplest assignment imaginable: name one fact. One passerby wonders whether a fact is "like when someone has their own perspective"; another puts pi at 3.17.
The comments arrived about ten times faster than on a usual first day, and most of them are about the election itself, with a long line of viewers from Canada, the Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand urging Americans to vote.
