Deadly High-Speed Train Crash in Spain Leaves at Least 30 Dead
Carriages were thrown clear of the tracks into a field beside the railway, NBC's Raf Sanchez reports in TODAY's early account of Spain's deadly high-speed train collision.
Reporting from London, Sanchez places the crash in the Toledo region, on the line connecting Madrid to southern Spain. The bulletin gives an initial official death toll of at least 30, with fears that it would rise as emergency crews worked at the scene.
Sanchez also recalls a fatal accident in January involving the same train companies and rail line. That earlier disaster provides context, but the report does not establish what caused this collision. Spain's prime minister canceled his schedule to respond to the crisis, Sanchez says.
The short bulletin drew nearly 60,000 views in its opening sixteen hours, well above TODAY's usual first-day audience for Shorts. Its focus remains the immediate aftermath, rather than an explanation of how the trains collided.
