ThatGuyGlen unpacks Noita's world of simulated pixels
His new documentary follows the difficult leap from an impressive physics experiment to a game worth playing.

How Noita Simulates Every Single Pixel
Making fire spread, liquids flow and terrain crumble was only part of Noita's problem. As ThatGuyGlen's new documentary explains, the harder task was giving players something to do with a world that could simulate so much.
"How Noita Simulates Every Single Pixel" arrived on November 3 and has reached roughly 132,000 views. Alongside that release, the channel's daily viewing has climbed to more than eleven times its usual level. That is a channel-wide jump, rather than a measure of the documentary alone.
The film traces Noita back to Petri Purho's falling-sand experiments and a small prototype called Bloody Zombies. Purho later teamed up with Arvi Teikari and Olli Harjola to build the custom Falling Everything engine. But a working simulation did not settle what kind of game they were making.
A God game, a Terraria-like sandbox, destructible buildings and a drill that could chew through almost anything all entered the experiments. The documentary explores how appealing ideas created fresh design problems when the systems collided. Inspiration from Spelunky helped point the team toward procedural worlds and permanent death, giving players a reason to learn the simulation's rules rather than just admire the effects.
There is also a useful wrinkle in that every-pixel promise: the film explains how Noita maintains a huge, continuous world without simulating every pixel all the time. Wand-building, hidden areas and the community's experiments round out ThatGuyGlen's account of how the technology became a game.
