Luka Dončić answers a courtside shoe compliment, and Prime's short flies
The clip drew about twenty-five times a usual first day for Amazon's sports channel, and its small comment section has turned into an argument over the reply.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 64,103 views a day, 26 times a normal first day on this channel (2,516).
Luka had to reply to this fan 😂 #shorts
A fan in the crowd liked Luka Dončić's shoes, said so out loud during a Lakers game against the Rockets, and Dončić did not let it pass. The moment, which first went up on the Lakers' own Instagram, is now the busiest thing on Sports On Prime by a wide margin.
Eight hours after it was posted, the short had passed 31,000 views. That puts it on course for roughly twenty-five times what a new video on the channel usually draws in its first day. The other uploads from the same day, a Bubba Wallace throwback, a LeBron James pass to VJ Edgecombe and an Aliyah Boston play against A'ja Wilson, were sitting in the low thousands or below.
What Dončić actually said is the point of the clip, and it is also what the few people commenting cannot agree on. One viewer thought he went too far, a reply thread grew underneath, and others mostly wonder why everyone is arguing at all.
Sports On Prime is Amazon's official sports channel, a feed of short, light moments rather than full highlights. It is the second time in a few days that a single player's reaction has carried it, after Jahmyr Gibbs borrowed Aaron Glenn's touchdown celebration, as we reported here. The channel as a whole is running about half again above its usual daily pace.
