Video taking off 12x its usual first day

Phillies homer their way to a Game 3, and NBC Sports' Game 2 reel flies

Extra innings against Atlanta drew far more viewers than the Yankees' and White Sox's playoff moments posted beside it, and the comments keep circling back to Bryce Harper.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 62,725 views a day, 12 times a normal first day on this channel (5,210).

Series tied, one game left. Philadelphia leaned on the long ball to beat Atlanta in extra innings in Game 2 of their NL Wild Card Series, forcing a deciding Game 3 in Atlanta. Six hours after NBC Sports posted the highlights, they had close to 25,000 views. That is a pace of roughly twelve times what a new upload on the channel usually gathers in its first full day.

The reel follows the Game 1 highlights, which also started fast, as we reported here. This time it has left the rest of October well behind. Cody Bellinger's three-run homer in the Bronx came on the night his father threw out the first pitch. Munetaka Murakami gave two cheerful locker-room interviews as the White Sox celebrated a sweep of Houston and their first playoff series win since 2005. Each of those clips sat at around two thousand views or fewer. The channel as a whole was running below its usual daily pace, so one tense night in Atlanta was doing much of the work.

Under the video, Bryce Harper is the name that keeps coming up. Viewers talk about him making up for an earlier moment, and they argue over a ball that one of them insists should simply have been caught. J.T. Realmuto gets credit for winning his challenges under the new automated ball-strike system, and one viewer jokes that he has a future as an umpire. Others simply call it 2008 all over again. That was the last year the Phillies won the World Series.
